Context:

This year Eurocontrol will launch a new flight data processing system to replace an outdated flight server, in order to improve air safety and communications.
To prepare their operational staff for the changeover, Eurocontrol will institute a training program including an initial 30-hour e-learning program, followed by accreditation training on a real-time system simulator.
Eurocontrol chose to retain KTM Advance to create the critical e-learning program, the key to preparing their personnel for the flight server simulation and accreditation on the new system.

Project Objectives:

maastricht_02_285• Introduce the tools, concepts and operating functions of the new flight data processing system to the operational staff of Eurocontrol Maastricht.
• Offer the trainees a “safe”, guided, training environment where they would be able to practice using the new system tools to prepare for simulator training.
• Build an online library of technical and functional documentation on the new flight data processing system.

The Project:

Eurocontrol Maastricht is responsible for the air traffic control of all civil and military flights for the North-western sector for Europe, including the airspace of the Netherlands, Belgium, the north of France, and the north-western sector of Germany.
During the summer high season, more than 5000 flights per day cross the skies of Maastricht’s area of responsibility, a traffic among densest in Europe.

This year Eurocontrol will launch a new flight data processing system to replace an outdated flight server which has neither the capacity to manage an average increase in traffic of 5% per year, nor the flexibility to allow the integration of new tools and functions needed to improve air safety and communications.
To prepare their operational staff for the changeover, Eurocontrol will institute a training program including an initial 30-hour e-learning program, followed by accreditation training on a real-time system simulator.

maastricht_04_285Three principal training profiles were initially identified - air-traffic controllers, flight data operators and sector supervisors - which were further subdivided into five sub-profiles. Each principal profile will use a different system interface and different tools to carry out a wide range of functions specific to each sub-profile.
